My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
My kindertjies, hierdie dinge skryf ek aan julle, dat julle nie sondig nie. En as iemand sondig, het ons ‚'n Voorspraak by die Vader, Jesus Christus die regverdige:

And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.
En Hy is die versoening vir ons sondes: en nie alleen vir ons s’n nie, maar ook vir die van die hele wêreld.
3
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
En hieraan weet ons dat ons Hom ken, as ons sy gebooie bewaar.
4
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
Hy wat sê, Ek ken Hom, en sy gebooie nie bewaar nie, is ’n leuenaar, en die waarheid is nie in hom nie.
5
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
Maar elkeen wat sy woord bewaar, in hom is die liefde van God waarlik volmaak. Hieraan weet ons dat ons in Hom is:

He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
Hy wat sê dat hy in Hom bly, behoort self ook so te wandel soos Hy gewandel het.
7
Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
Broers, ek skryf geen nuwe gebod aan julle nie, maar ‚'n ou gebod wat julle van die begin af gehad het. Die ou gebod is die woord wat julle van die begin af gehoor het.

Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
Weer, ‚'n nuwe gebod skryf ek aan julle, wat waar is in Hom en in julle: omdat die duisternis verbygaan, en die ware lig nou skyn.
9
He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
Hy wat sê dat hy in die lig is, en sy broer haat, is in die duisternis tot nou toe.
10
He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
Hy wat sy broer liefhet, bly in die lig, en daar is geen struikelblok in hom nie.
11
But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
Maar hy wat sy broer haat, is in die duisternis, en wandel in die duisternis, en weet nie waarheen hy gaan nie, omdat die duisternis sy oë verblind het.

I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.
Ek skryf aan julle, kindertjies, omdat julle sondes om sy Naam ontwil vergewe is.
13
I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
Ek skryf aan julle, vaders, omdat julle Hom geken het wat van die begin af is. Ek skryf aan julle, jongmanne, omdat julle die boosheid oorwin het. Ek skryf aan julle, kindertjies, omdat julle die Vader geken het.

I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
Ek het aan julle, vaders, geskrywe, omdat julle Hom geken het wat van die begin af is. Ek het aan julle, jongmanne, geskrywe, omdat julle sterk is, en die woord van God in julle bly, en julle die boosheid oorwin het.

Love not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Het nie die wêreld lief, en ook nie die dinge wat in die wêreld is nie. As iemand die wêreld liefhet, is die liefde van die Vader nie in hom nie.
16
For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Want alles wat in die wêreld is, die begeerlikheid van die vlees, en die begeerlikheid van die oë, en die hoogmoed van die lewe, is nie uit die Vader nie, maar is uit die wêreld.
17
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
En die wêreld gaan verby, en die begeerlikheid daarvan: maar hy wat die wil van God doen, bly tot in ewigheid.
18
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
Kindertjies, dit is die laaste tyd: en soos julle gehoor het dat die antichris kom, selfs nou is daar baie antichriste; waaruit ons weet dat dit die laaste tyd is.

They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would [no doubt] have continued with us: but [they went out], that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Hulle is van ons uitgegaan, maar hulle was nie van ons nie; want as hulle van ons was, sou hulle by ons gebly het: maar hulle is uitgegaan, dat hulle openbaar mag word dat hulle nie almal van ons is nie.

But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
Maar julle het ‚'n salwing van die Heilige, en julle ken alle dinge.
21
I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
Ek het nie aan julle geskrywe omdat julle die waarheid nie ken nie, maar omdat julle dit ken, en dat geen leuen uit die waarheid is nie.
22
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
Wie is ’n leuenaar behalwe hy wat loën dat Jesus die Christus is? Hy is die antichris, wat die Vader en die Seun loën.

Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [(but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also].
Elkeen wat die Seun loën, het ook die Vader nie: [maar] hy wat die Seun bely, het ook die Vader.
24
Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
Laat daarom dit in julle bly wat julle van die begin af gehoor het. As dit wat julle van die begin af gehoor het in julle bly, sal julle ook in die Seun, en in die Vader bly.
25
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, [even] eternal life.
En dit is die belofte wat Hy ons beloof het, selfs die ewige lewe.
26
These [things] have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
Hierdie dinge het ek aan julle geskrywe aangaande hulle wat julle verlei.
27
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Maar die salwing wat julle van Hom ontvang het, bly in julle, en julle het nie nodig dat iemand julle leer nie: maar soos dieselfde salwing julle aangaande alle dinge leer, en is waarheid, en is geen leuen nie, en soos dit julle geleer het, sal julle in Hom bly.

And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
En nou, kindertjies, bly in Hom; dat, wanneer Hy verskyn, ons vrymoedigheid mag hê, en nie skaam word voor Hom by sy koms nie.
29
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
As julle weet dat Hy regverdig is, julle weet dat elkeen wat die geregtigheid doen, uit Hom gebore is.
