1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Geliefdes, glo nie elke gees nie, maar beproef die geeste of hulle uit God is: omdat baie valse profete in die wêreld uitgegaan het.
2
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
Hieraan ken julle die Gees van God: Elke gees wat bely dat Jesus Christus in die vlees gekom het, is uit God:
3
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
En elke gees wat nie bely dat Jesus Christus in die vlees gekom het nie, is nie uit God nie: en dit is daardie gees van die antichris, waarvan julle gehoor het dat hy kom; en selfs nou al is hy in die wêreld.

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Julle is uit God, kindertjies, en het hulle oorwin: omdat groter is Hy wat in julle is, as hy wat in die wêreld is.

They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
Hulle is uit die wêreld: daarom spreek hulle uit die wêreld, en die wêreld hoor hulle.

We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
Ons is uit God: hy wat God ken, hoor ons; hy wat nie uit God is nie, hoor ons nie. Hieraan ken ons die gees van die waarheid, en die gees van die dwaling.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
Geliefdes, laat ons mekaar liefhê: want die liefde is uit God; en elkeen wat liefhet, is uit God gebore, en ken God.
8
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Hy wat nie liefhet nie, ken God nie; want God is liefde.
9
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Hierin is die liefde van God teenoor ons geopenbaar, dat God sy eniggebore Seun in die wêreld gestuur het, dat ons deur Hom mag lewe.
10
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.
Hierin is die liefde, nie dat ons God liefgehad het nie, maar dat Hy ons liefgehad het, en sy Seun gestuur het om die versoening vir ons sondes te wees.
11
Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
Geliefdes, as God ons so liefgehad het, behoort ons ook mekaar lief te hê.
12
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
Niemand het God ooit gesien nie. As ons mekaar liefhet, bly God in ons, en sy liefde is in ons volmaak.
13
Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
Hieraan weet ons dat ons in Hom bly, en Hy in ons, omdat Hy ons van sy Gees gegee het.
14
And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son [to be] the Saviour of the world.
En ons het gesien en getuig dat die Vader die Seun as die Verlosser van die wêreld gestuur het.
15
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
Elkeen wat bely dat Jesus die Seun van God is, in hom bly God, en hy in God.
16
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
En ons het geken en geglo die liefde wat God tot ons het. God is liefde; en hy wat in die liefde bly, bly in God, en God in hom.
17
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
Hierin is ons liefde volmaak, dat ons vrymoedigheid mag hê in die dag van die oordeel: omdat soos Hy is, so is ons in hierdie wêreld.
18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
Daar is geen vrees in die liefde nie; maar die volmaakte liefde dryf die vrees uit: omdat vrees pyniging het. Hy wat vrees, is nie volmaak in die liefde nie.

We love him, because he first loved us.
Ons het Hom lief, omdat Hy ons eers liefgehad het.
20
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
As iemand sê, Ek het God lief, en haat sy broer, is hy ’n leuenaar: want hy wat sy broer nie liefhet nie wat hy gesien het, hoe kan hy God liefhê wat hy nie gesien het nie?

And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
En hierdie gebod het ons van Hom, Dat hy wat God liefhet, sy broer ook liefhet.
