And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who [was] in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard [it], that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
En dit was so, toe Jeróbeam die seun van Nebat, wat in Egipte was, waarheen hy van die teenwoordigheid van Salomo die koning gevlug het, dit gehoor het, dat Jeróbeam uit Egipte teruggekeer het.

And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,
En hulle het gestuur en hom geroep. So het Jeróbeam en die hele Israel dan gekom en met Rehábeam gespreek, en gesê,

Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
Jou vader het ons juk swaar gemaak: maak jy nou die swaar diens van jou vader, en sy swaar juk wat hy op ons gelê het, ligter, en ons sal jou dien.

And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
En hy het tot hulle gesê, Kom weer by my oor drie dae. En die volk het weggegaan.

And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye [me] to return answer to this people?
En koning Rehábeam het geraadpleeg met die ou manne wat voor Salomo sy vader gestaan het terwyl hy nog gelewe het, en gesê, Hoe raai julle my om hierdie volk te antwoord?

And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
En hulle het met hom gespreek, en gesê, As jy goed is vir hierdie volk, en hulle behaag, en goeie woorde tot hulle spreek, sal hulle jou dienaars wees vir ewig.

But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.
Maar hy het die raad van die ou manne verwerp wat hulle hom gegee het, en het geraadpleeg met die jongmanne wat saam met hom grootgeword het, wat voor hom gestaan het.

And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
En hy het tot hulle gesê, Wat raai julle dat ons hierdie volk antwoord moet gee, wat met my gespreek het, en gesê het, Maak die juk wat jou vader op ons gelê het, ligter?

And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou [it] somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little [finger] shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
En die jongmanne wat saam met hom grootgeword het, het met hom gespreek, en gesê, So moet jy tot die volk sê wat met jou gespreek het, en gesê het, Jou vader het ons juk swaar gemaak, maar maak jy dit ligter vir ons; so moet jy tot hulle sê, My klein vinger sal dikker wees as my vader se lendene.

For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I [will chastise you] with scorpions.
Want terwyl my vader ’n swaar juk op julle gelê het, sal ek by julle juk byvoeg: my vader het julle met gésels geslaan, maar ek sal julle met skerpioene slaan.

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
So het Jeróbeam en die hele volk dan by Rehábeam op die derde dag gekom, soos die koning beveel het, en gesê het, Kom weer by my op die derde dag.

And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
En die koning het hulle hard geantwoord: en koning Rehábeam het die raad van die ou manne verwerp,

And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I [will chastise you] with scorpions.
En hulle geantwoord volgens die raad van die jongmanne, en gesê, My vader het julle juk swaar gemaak, maar ek sal daarby byvoeg: my vader het julle met gésels geslaan, maar ek sal julle met skerpioene slaan.

So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
So het die koning dan nie na die volk geluister nie: want die oorsaak was van God, dat die HERE sy woord sou uitvoer, wat Hy deur die hand van Ahía die Siloniet tot Jeróbeam die seun van Nebat gespreek het.

And when all Israel [saw] that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and [we have] none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: [and] now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
En toe die hele Israel sien dat die koning nie na hulle wou luister nie, het die volk die koning geantwoord, en gesê, Watter deel het ons in Dawid? en ons het geen erfenis in die seun van Isai nie: elkeen na jou tente, o Israel: en nou, Dawid, sien na jou eie huis. So het die hele Israel dan na hulle tente gegaan.

But [as for] the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
Maar wat die kinders van Israel betref wat in die stede van Juda gewoon het, Rehábeam het oor hulle geregeer.

Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that [was] over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to [his] chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
Toe het koning Rehábeam Hadoram gestuur wat oor die dienspligtiges was; en die kinders van Israel het hom met klippe gestenig, dat hy gesterwe het. Maar koning Rehábeam het homself haastig op sy strydwa gemaak om na Jérusalem te vlug.

And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
En Israel het in opstand gekom teen die huis van Dawid tot vandag toe.
