Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:
Nou toe hulle deur Amfípolis en Apollónia gegaan het, het hulle in Thessaloníka gekom, waar ’n sinagoge van die Jode was:

And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
En Paulus, soos sy gewoonte was, het by hulle ingegaan, en drie sabbatdae lank met hulle uit die Skrifte geredeneer,

Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.
Uitleggende en aantonende, dat Christus moes ly, en opstaan uit die dooies; en dat hierdie Jesus, wat ek aan julle verkondig, die Christus is.

And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
En sommige van hulle het geglo, en by Paulus en Silas aangesluit; en van die godvresende Grieke ‚'n groot menigte, en van die voornaamste vroue nie ‚'n klein getal nie.

But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
Maar die Jode wat nie geglo het nie, beweeg deur afguns, het sekere slegte manne van die markgangers bymekaargeneem, en ‚'n skare bymekaargemaak, en die stad in oproer gebring, en die huis van Jason aangerand, en hulle gesoek om hulle voor die volk te bring.

And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
En toe hulle hulle nie vind nie, het hulle Jason en sekere broers voor die stadsowerstes gesleep, en geroep, Hierdie wat die wêreld onderstebo gekeer het is ook hier gekom;

Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, [one] Jesus.
Wat Jason ontvang het: en hierdie almal doen teen die beslissings van César, sê dat daar ’n ander koning is, een Jesus.

And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
En hulle het die mense en die stadsowerstes ontstel, toe hulle hierdie dinge gehoor het.

And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.
En toe hulle sekuriteit van Jason en van die ander geneem het, het hulle hulle laat gaan.

And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming [thither] went into the synagogue of the Jews.
En die broers het dadelik Paulus en Silas in die nag na Beréa gestuur: wat, toe hulle daar kom, in die sinagoge van die Jode ingegaan het.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Hierdie was meer edelmoedig as dié in Thessaloníka, in dat hulle die woord met alle bereidwilligheid ontvang het, en daagliks die Skrifte ondersoek het, of daardie dinge so was.

Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
Daarom het baie van hulle geglo; ook van eerbare vroue wat Grieke was, en van manne, nie ‚'n klein getal nie.

But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.
Maar toe die Jode van Thessaloníka geweet het dat die woord van God ook in Beréa deur Paulus verkondig is, het hulle daarheen gekom, en die mense opgerui.

And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.
En toe het die broers dadelik Paulus weggestuur om asof na die see te gaan: maar Silas en Timótheüs het daar gebly.

And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.
En dié wat Paulus begelei het het hom na Athene gebring: en nadat hulle ’n bevel ontvang het tot Silas en Timótheüs om so gou as moontlik by hom te kom, het hulle weggegaan.

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
Nou terwyl Paulus op hulle in Athene gewag het, is sy gees in hom ontsteld, toe hy die stad sien heeltemal aan afgodediens oorgegee.

Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.
Daarom het hy in die sinagoge met die Jode geredeneer, en met die godvresendes, en in die mark daagliks met hulle wat hom ontmoet het.

Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
Toe het sekere filosowe van die Epikureërs, en van die Stoïsyne, met hom ontmoet. En sommige het gesê, Wat wil hierdie babbelbek sê? andere, Hy skyn ’n verkondiger van vreemde gode te wees: omdat hy aan hulle Jesus, en die opstanding, verkondig het.

And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, [is]?
En hulle het hom geneem, en na die Areopagus gebring, sê, Mag ons weet wat hierdie nuwe leer is, waarvan jy spreek?

For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
Want jy bring sekere vreemde dinge tot ons ore: ons wil daarom weet wat hierdie dinge beteken.

(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
(Want al die Atheneërs en die vreemdelinge wat daar was, het hulle tyd aan niks anders bestee nie, as om iets nuuts te vertel, of te hoor.)

Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, [Ye] men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
Toe het Paulus in die midde van die Areopagus gestaan, en gesê, Julle manne van Athene, ek bespeur dat julle in alle dinge te bygelowig is.

For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
Want soos ek verbygegaan het, en julle heiligdomme aanskou het, het ek ‚'n altaar gevind met hierdie opskrif, AAN DIE ONBEKENDE GOD. Wat julle daarom onwetend aanbid, dit verkondig ek aan julle.

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
God wat die wêreld gemaak het en alle dinge daarin, aangesien Hy Here is van hemel en aarde, woon nie in tempels wat met hande gemaak is nie;
25
Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
En word ook nie deur mensehande gedien, asof Hy iets nodig het nie, aangesien Hy self aan almal lewe, en asem, en alle dinge gee;

And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
En het uit een bloed alle nasies van die mense gemaak om op die hele aangesig van die aarde te woon, en het tevore bepaal tye, en die grense van hulle woonplek;
27
That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
Dat hulle die Here sou soek, of hulle Hom miskien sou voel en vind, alhoewel Hy nie ver van elkeen van ons is nie:
28
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
Want in Hom lewe ons, en beweeg ons, en is ons; soos sekere van julle eie digters ook gesê het, Want ons is ook sy geslag.

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
Aangesien ons dan die geslag van God is, behoort ons nie te dink dat die Godheid gelyk is aan goud, of silwer, of steen, gegraveer deur kuns en mens se uitvinding nie.

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
En die tye van hierdie onkunde het God oorgesien; maar nou beveel Hy alle mense oral om hulle te bekeer:

Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by [that] man whom he hath ordained; [whereof] he hath given assurance unto all [men], in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Omdat Hy ’n dag aangestel het, waarop Hy die wêreld in geregtigheid sal oordeel deur daardie man wat Hy verordineer het; waarvan Hy aan almal versekering gegee het, deurdat Hy Hom uit die dooies opgewek het.

And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this [matter].
En toe hulle van die opstanding van die dooies hoor, het sommige gespot: en andere het gesê, Ons sal jou weer hieroor hoor.

So Paul departed from among them.
So het Paulus van hulle weggegaan.

Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which [was] Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
Hoebeit sekere manne het by hom aangesluit, en geglo: onder wie was Dionísius die Areopagiet, en ’n vrou met die naam van Dámaris, en andere saam met hulle.
