Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

Toe het die hoëpriester gesê, Is hierdie dinge so?

And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

En hy het gesê, Manne, broers, en vaders, luister; Die God van heerlikheid het aan ons vader Abraham verskyn, toe hy in Mesopotamië was, voordat hy in Haran woonagtig was,

And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

En tot hom gesê, Gaan uit jou land, en van jou familie, en kom in die land wat ek jou sal wys.

Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

Toe het hy uitgegaan uit die land van die Chaldeërs, en in Haran woonagtig geword: en van daar, toe sy vader dood was, het Hy hom in hierdie land versit, waarin julle nou woon.

And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not [so much as] to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when [as yet] he had no child.

En Hy het hom geen erfenis daarin gegee nie, nee, nie soveel as om sy voet op te sit nie: tog het Hy beloof dat Hy dit aan hom tot ’n besitting sou gee, en aan sy saad ná hom, toe hy nog geen kind gehad het nie.

And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat [them] evil four hundred years.

En God het so gespreek, Dat sy saad ‚'n vreemdeling sou wees in ‚'n vreemde land; en dat hulle hulle in diensbaarheid sou bring, en hulle vierhonderd jaar lank sleg behandel.

And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

En die nasie aan wie hulle diensbaar sal wees sal ek oordeel, het God gesê: en daarna sal hulle uitgaan, en My in hierdie plek dien.

And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so [Abraham] begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac [begat] Jacob; and Jacob [begat] the twelve patriarchs.

En Hy het hom die verbond van die besnydenis gegee: en so het Abraham Isak verwek, en hom op die agtste dag besny; en Isak het Jakob verwek; en Jakob die twaalf aartsvaders.

And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

En die aartsvaders, jaloers op Josef, het hom in Egipte verkoop: maar God was met hom,

And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

En het hom uit al sy benoudhede verlos, en hom guns en wysheid gegee in die sig van Farao die koning van Egipte; en hy het hom as goewerneur oor Egipte en sy hele huis aangestel.

Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

Nou het daar ’n hongersnood oor die hele land van Egipte en Kanaän gekom, en groot benoudheid: en ons vaders het geen voedsel gevind nie.

But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

Maar toe Jakob gehoor het dat daar koring in Egipte was, het hy ons vaders die eerste maal uitgestuur.

And at the second [time] Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

En by die tweede maal is Josef aan sy broers bekend gemaak; en Josef se familie is aan Farao openbaar gemaak.

Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to [him], and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

Toe het Josef gestuur, en sy vader Jakob geroep, en al sy familie, vyf en sewentig siele.

So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

So het Jakob afgegaan na Egipte, en is dood, hy, en ons vaders,

And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor [the father] of Sychem.

En is oorgebring na Sigem, en in die graf gelê wat Abraham gekoop het vir ’n som geld van die seuns van Hemor die vader van Sigem.

But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

Maar toe die tyd van die belofte naby gekom het, wat God aan Abraham gesweer het, het die volk vermeerder en vermeerder in Egipte,

Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

Totdat ‚'n ander koning opgestaan het, wat Josef nie geken het nie.

The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

Hierdie het listig met ons geslag gehandel, en ons vaders sleg behandel, sodat hulle hulle jong kinders uitgesit het, dat hulle nie sou lewe nie.

In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months:

In daardie tyd is Moses gebore, en was uitnemend mooi, en is drie maande lank in sy vader se huis grootgemaak:

And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

En toe hy uitgegooi is, het Farao se dogter hom opgeneem, en hom as haar eie seun grootgemaak.

And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

En Moses is geleer in al die wysheid van die Egiptenaars, en was magtig in woorde en in dade.

And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

En toe hy veertig jaar oud was, het dit in sy hart opgekom om sy broers die kinders van Israel te besoek.

And seeing one [of them] suffer wrong, he defended [him], and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

En toe hy een van hulle ly sien, het hy hom verdedig, en die onderdrukte gewreek, en die Egiptenaar doodgeslaan:

For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

Want hy het veronderstel dat sy broers sou verstaan hoe dat God deur sy hand hulle verlossing sou gee: maar hulle het dit nie verstaan nie.

And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

En die volgende dag het hy aan hulle verskyn soos hulle baklei, en wou hulle tot vrede bring, sê, Manne, julle is broers; waarom doen julle mekaar onreg?

But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

Maar hy wat sy naaste onreg aangedoen het, het hom weggestoot, sê, Wie het jou tot ’n owerste en ’n regter oor ons aangestel?

Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

Wil jy my doodmaak, soos jy gister die Egiptenaar doodgemaak het?

Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

Toe het Moses by hierdie woord gevlug, en was ’n vreemdeling in die land van Mídian, waar hy twee seuns verwek het.

And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

En toe veertig jaar verby was, het daar aan hom in die wildernis van die berg Sinaï ’n engel van die Here verskyn in ’n vlam van vuur in ’n bos.

When Moses saw [it], he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold [it], the voice of the Lord came unto him,

Toe Moses dit sien, het hy hom verwonder oor die gesig: en soos hy nader gekom het om dit te ondersoek, het die stem van die Here tot hom gekom,

[Saying], I [am] the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

Sê, Ek is die God van jou vaders, die God van Abraham, en die God van Isak, en die God van Jakob. Toe het Moses gebewe, en nie gewaag om te kyk nie.

Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

Toe het die Here tot hom gesê, Trek jou skoene van jou voete af: want die plek waar jy staan is heilige grond.

I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

Ek het, ek het die verdrukking van my volk gesien wat in Egipte is, en ek het hulle gesug gehoor, en is afgekom om hulle te verlos. En nou kom, ek sal jou na Egipte stuur.

This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send [to be] a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

Hierdie Moses wat hulle verwerp het, sê, Wie het jou tot ’n owerste en ’n regter aangestel? dieselfde het God gestuur om ’n owerste en ’n verlosser te wees deur die hand van die engel wat aan hom in die bos verskyn het.

He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

Hy het hulle uitgelei, nadat hy wonders en tekens in die land van Egipte, en in die Rooi See, en in die wildernis veertig jaar lank gedoen het.

This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

Dit is daardie Moses, wat tot die kinders van Israel gesê het, ’n Profeet sal die Here julle God vir julle verwek uit julle broers, soos ek; Hom moet julle hoor.

This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and [with] our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

Dit is hy, wat in die gemeente in die wildernis was met die engel wat met hom op die berg Sinaï gespreek het, en met ons vaders: wat die lewende woorde ontvang het om aan ons te gee:

To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust [him] from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

Aan wie ons vaders nie gehoorsaam wou wees nie, maar hom weggestoot het, en in hulle harte na Egipte teruggekeer het,

Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for [as for] this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

Sê tot Aäron, Maak ons gode wat voor ons uit sal gaan: want wat hierdie Moses betref, wat ons uit die land van Egipte uitgelei het, ons weet nie wat van hom geword het nie.

And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

En hulle het in daardie dae ‚'n kalf gemaak, en ‚'n offer aan die afgod gebring, en hulle verbly in die werke van hulle eie hande.

Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices [by the space of] forty years in the wilderness?

Toe het God Hom omgedraai, en hulle oorgegee om die leër van die hemel te dien; soos geskrywe is in die boek van die profete, o huis van Israel, het julle aan My slagoffers en offers gebring veertig jaar lank in die wildernis?

Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

Ja, julle het die tabernakel van Molog opgeneem, en die ster van julle god Remfan, figure wat julle gemaak het om hulle te aanbid: en ek sal julle wegvoer oorkant Babel.

Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

Ons vaders het die tabernakel van die getuienis in die wildernis gehad, soos Hy aangewys het, wat tot Moses gespreek het, dat hy dit moes maak volgens die voorbeeld wat hy gesien het.

Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

Wat ook ons vaders wat dit ontvang het, met Jesus in die besitting van die heidene gebring het, wat God voor die aangesig van ons vaders uitgedryf het, tot die dae van Dawid;

Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

Wat guns by God gevind het, en begeer het om ‚'n tabernakel te vind vir die God van Jakob.

But Solomon built him an house.

Maar Salomo het Hom ‚'n huis gebou.

Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

Hoebeit die Allerhoogste woon nie in tempels wat met hande gemaak is nie; soos die profeet sê,

Heaven [is] my throne, and earth [is] my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what [is] the place of my rest?

Die hemel is my troon, en die aarde is my voetbank: watter huis sal julle vir My bou? sê die Here: of wat is die plek van my rus?

Hath not my hand made all these things?

Het my hand nie al hierdie dinge gemaak nie?

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers [did], so [do] ye.

Julle hardnekkiges en onbesnedenes van hart en ore, julle weerstaan altyd die Heilige Gees: soos julle vaders gedoen het, so doen julle.

Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

Watter van die profete het julle vaders nie vervolg nie? en hulle het dié omgebring wat tevore die koms van die Regverdige aangekondig het; van wie julle nou die verraaiers en moordenaars geword het:

Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept [it].

Wat die wet deur die beskikking van engele ontvang het, en dit nie bewaar het nie.

When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with [their] teeth.

Toe hulle hierdie dinge hoor, is hulle in hulle harte deurboor, en het op hom gekners met hulle tande.

But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

Maar hy, vol van die Heilige Gees, het stip na die hemel gekyk, en die heerlikheid van God gesien, en Jesus staande aan die regterhand van God,

And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

En gesê, Kyk, ek sien die hemele oop, en die Seun van die mens staande aan die regterhand van God.

Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

Toe het hulle met ‚'n groot stem uitgeroep, en hulle ore toegestop, en eendragtig op hom aangedring,

And cast [him] out of the city, and stoned [him]: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

En hom uit die stad uitgewerp, en hom gestenig: en die getuies het hulle klere neergelê by die voete van ’n jongman, met die naam van Saulus.

And they stoned Stephen, calling upon [God], and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

En hulle het Stefanus gestenig, wat God aangeroep het, en gesê, Here Jesus, ontvang my gees.

And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

En hy het op sy knieë neergekniel, en met ’n groot stem uitgeroep, Here, reken hulle hierdie sonde nie toe nie. En toe hy dit gesê het, het hy ontslaap.
