And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
En toe Sigem, die seun van Hemor die Hewiet, die vors van die land, haar sien, het hy haar geneem, en by haar gelê, en haar onteer.

And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
En sy siel het aan Dina, die dogter van Jakob, gekleef, en hy het die jongmeisie liefgehad, en tot die hart van die jongmeisie gespreek.

And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
En Sigem het tot sy vader Hemor gesê, Neem vir my hierdie meisie tot vrou.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.
En Jakob het gehoor dat hy sy dogter Dina onteer het: nou was sy seuns by sy vee in die veld: en Jakob het stilgebly totdat hulle gekom het.

And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.
En Hemor, die vader van Sigem, het uitgegaan na Jakob om met hom te spreek.

And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard [it]: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter; which thing ought not to be done.
En die seuns van Jakob het van die veld gekom toe hulle dit hoor: en die manne was bedroef, en baie toornig, omdat hy dwaasheid in Israel gedoen het deur by Jakob se dogter te lê; wat so nie behoort te geskied nie.

And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
En Hemor het met hulle gespreek, en gesê, Die siel van my seun Sigem verlang na julle dogter: gee haar tog aan hom tot vrou.

And make ye marriages with us, [and] give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.
En vermaagskap julle met ons; gee julle dogters aan ons, en neem julle ons dogters vir julle;
10
And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
En julle sal by ons woon: en die land sal voor julle wees; woon en handel daarin, en verkry besittings daarin.
11
And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
En Sigem het tot haar vader en tot haar broers gesê, Laat my genade in julle oë vind, en wat julle my sê, sal ek gee.
12
Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.
Vra my baie bruidskat en gawe, en ek sal gee soos julle my sê: maar gee my die meisie tot vrou.

And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:
En die seuns van Jakob het Sigem en Hemor sy vader met bedrog geantwoord, en gespreek, omdat hy hulle suster Dina onteer het:
14
And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that [were] a reproach unto us:
En hulle het tot hulle gesê, Ons kan dit nie doen om ons suster aan ’n man te gee wat onbesnede is nie; want dit sou ’n smaad vir ons wees.
15
But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we [be], that every male of you be circumcised;
Net hierin sal ons julle toestem: as julle soos ons word, dat elke manlike onder julle besny word;
16
Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
Dan sal ons ons dogters aan julle gee, en julle dogters vir ons neem, en ons sal by julle woon, en ons sal een volk word.
17
But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.
Maar as julle nie na ons luister om besny te word nie, dan sal ons ons dogter neem, en weggaan.
18
And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son.
En hulle woorde was goed in die oë van Hemor, en in die oë van Sigem, Hemor se seun.
19
And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter: and he [was] more honourable than all the house of his father.
En die jongman het nie getalm om die ding te doen nie, omdat hy behae gehad het in Jakob se dogter: en hy was die eerbaarste van sy hele vader se huis.
20
And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
En Hemor en Sigem sy seun het na die poort van hulle stad gekom, en met die manne van hulle stad gespreek, en gesê,
21
These men [are] peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, [it is] large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
Hierdie manne is vreedsaam by ons; daarom laat hulle in die land woon, en daarin handel; want die land, kyk, is groot genoeg vir hulle; laat ons hulle dogters vir ons tot vroue neem, en laat ons ons dogters aan hulle gee.

Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they [are] circumcised.
Net hierin sal die manne ons toestem om by ons te woon, om een volk te word, as elke manlike onder ons besny word, soos hulle besny is.
23
[Shall] not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs [be] ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
Sal hulle vee en hulle besittings en al hulle diere nie ons s‚'n wees nie? net laat ons hulle toestem, en hulle sal by ons woon.
24
And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
En almal wat by die poort van sy stad uitgaan, het na Hemor en na Sigem sy seun geluister: en elke manlike is besny, almal wat by die poort van sy stad uitgegaan het.

And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
En dit het gebeur op die derde dag, toe hulle seer was, dat twee van die seuns van Jakob, Simeon en Levi, Dina se broers, elkeen sy swaard geneem het, en moedig op die stad afgekom het, en al die manlike doodgemaak het.

And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.
En hulle het Hemor en Sigem sy seun met die skerpte van die swaard doodgemaak, en Dina uit Sigem se huis geneem, en weggegaan.

The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
Die seuns van Jakob het op die dooies gekom, en die stad geplunder, omdat hulle hulle suster onteer het.
28
They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which [was] in the city, and that which [was] in the field,
Hulle het hulle kleinvee, en hulle beeste, en hulle esels, en wat in die stad was, en wat in die veld was, geneem,
29
And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that [was] in the house.
En al hulle rykdom, en al hulle kinders, en hulle vroue weggevoer gevange, en geplunder, selfs alles wat in die huis was.
30
And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I [being] few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
En Jakob het tot Simeon en Levi gesê, Julle het my in die moeilikheid gebring om my stinkend te maak onder die inwoners van die land, onder die Kanaäniete en die Feresiete: en ek is min in getal, hulle sal teen my bymekaarkom, en my verslaan; en ek sal vernietig word, ek en my huis.

And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?
En hulle het gesê, Moet hy dan met ons suster handel soos met ’n hoer?
