And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name [was] Hirah.
En dit het gebeur in daardie tyd, dat Juda van sy broers af afgegaan het, en hom na ‚'n sekere Adullamiet gekeer het, wie se naam Hira was.

And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name [was] Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
En Juda het daar ’n dogter van ’n sekere Kanaäniet gesien, wie se naam Sua was; en hy het haar geneem, en by haar ingegaan.

And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
En sy het ontvang, en ‚'n seun gebaar; en hy het sy naam Er genoem.

And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
En sy het weer ontvang, en ‚'n seun gebaar; en sy het sy naam Onan genoem.

And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
En sy het nog verder ‚'n seun gebaar, en sy naam Sela genoem: en hy was in Kesib toe sy hom gebaar het.

And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name [was] Tamar.
En Juda het ‚'n vrou geneem vir Er sy eersgeborene, wie se naam Tamar was.

And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
En Er, Juda se eersgeborene, was goddeloos in die oë van die HERE; en die HERE het hom gedood.

And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
En Juda het tot Onan gesê, Gaan in tot jou broer se vrou, en trou met haar, en verwek saad vir jou broer.

And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled [it] on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
En Onan het geweet dat die saad nie syne sou wees nie; en dit het gebeur, wanneer hy by sy broer se vrou ingegaan het, dat hy dit op die grond gemors het, om nie saad aan sy broer te gee nie.

And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
En die ding wat hy gedoen het, was sleg in die oë van die HERE: daarom het Hy hom ook gedood.

Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren [did]. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.
Toe het Juda tot Tamar sy skoondogter gesê, Bly ’n weduwee in jou vader se huis, totdat Sela my seun groot is: want hy het gesê, Dat hy ook nie sterwe soos sy broers nie. En Tamar het gegaan en in haar vader se huis gebly.

And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
En met verloop van tyd het die dogter van Sua, Juda se vrou, gesterwe; en Juda is getroos, en het opgegaan na sy skaapskeerders na Timna, hy en sy vriend Hira die Adullamiet.

And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
En dit is aan Tamar vertel, en gesê, Kyk, jou skoonvader gaan op na Timna om sy skape te skeer.

And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which [is] by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
En sy het die klere van haar weduweeskap van haar afgelê, en haar met ’n sluier bedek, en haar toegedraai, en gaan sit in ’n oop plek, wat by die pad na Timna is; want sy het gesien dat Sela groot geword het, en sy is nie aan hom tot vrou gegee nie.

When Judah saw her, he thought her [to be] an harlot; because she had covered her face.
Toe Juda haar sien, het hy haar vir ‚'n hoer aangesien; omdat sy haar aangesig bedek het.
16
And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she [was] his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
En hy het na haar toe aan die pad afgedraai, en gesê, Kom tog, laat my by jou ingaan; (want hy het nie geweet dat sy sy skoondogter is nie.) En sy het gesê, Wat sal jy my gee, dat jy by my mag ingaan?

And he said, I will send [thee] a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give [me] a pledge, till thou send [it]?
En hy het gesê, Ek sal jou ’n bokkie van die kudde stuur. En sy het gesê, Sal jy my ’n pand gee totdat jy dit stuur?

And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that [is] in thine hand. And he gave [it] her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
En hy het gesê, Watter pand sal ek jou gee? En sy het gesê, Jou seëlring, en jou koord, en jou staf wat in jou hand is. En hy het dit aan haar gegee, en by haar ingegaan, en sy het by hom ontvang.

And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
En sy het opgestaan, en weggegaan, en haar sluier van haar afgelê, en die klere van haar weduweeskap aangetrek.

And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive [his] pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.
En Juda het die bokkie gestuur deur die hand van sy vriend die Adullamiet, om die pand uit die vrou se hand te ontvang: maar hy het haar nie gevind nie.
21
Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where [is] the harlot, that [was] openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this [place].
Toe het hy die manne van daardie plek gevra, en gesê, Waar is die hoer, wat by die pad by Enajim was? En hulle het gesê, Daar was geen hoer hier nie.

And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, [that] there was no harlot in this [place].
En hy het na Juda teruggekeer, en gesê, Ek het haar nie gevind nie; en ook die manne van die plek het gesê, Daar was geen hoer hier nie.

And Judah said, Let her take [it] to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
En Juda het gesê, Laat haar dit hou, dat ons nie tot skande word nie: kyk, ek het hierdie bokkie gestuur, en jy het haar nie gevind nie.

And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she [is] with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
En dit het gebeur omtrent drie maande daarna, dat aan Juda vertel is, en gesê, Tamar jou skoondogter het gehoereer; en ook, kyk, sy is swanger van hoerery. En Juda het gesê, Bring haar uit, en laat haar verbrand word.

When she [was] brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these [are, am] I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose [are] these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
Toe sy uitgebring is, het sy na haar skoonvader gestuur, en gesê, Deur die man aan wie hierdie dinge behoort, is ek swanger: en sy het gesê, Ken tog wie se hierdie seëlring, en hierdie koorde, en hierdie staf is.

And Judah acknowledged [them], and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
En Juda het hulle herken, en gesê, Sy is regverdiger as ek; omdat ek haar nie aan my seun Sela gegee het nie. En hy het haar nie weer geken nie.

And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins [were] in her womb.
En dit het gebeur in die tyd van haar baring, dat kyk, daar was tweelinge in haar skoot.

And it came to pass, when she travailed, that [the one] put out [his] hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
En dit het gebeur, toe sy baar, dat die een die hand uitgesteek het: en die vroedvrou het dit geneem, en ’n skarlaken draad om sy hand gebind, en gesê, Hierdie het eerste uitgekom.

And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? [this] breach [be] upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
En dit het gebeur, toe hy sy hand teruggetrek het, dat kyk, sy broer het uitgekom: en sy het gesê, Hoe het jy vir jou ’n breuk gemaak? Daarom is sy naam Peres genoem.

And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
En daarna het sy broer uitgekom, om wie se hand die skarlaken draad was: en sy naam is Serag genoem.
