1
Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.
Efraim voed op wind, en volg die oostewind: hy vermeerder daagliks leuens en verwoesting; en hulle maak ’n verbond met die Assiriërs, en olie word na Egipte gebring.

The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.
Die HERE het ook ’n twis met Juda, en sal Jakob besoek volgens sy weë; volgens sy doenings sal Hy hom vergelde.

He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:
Hy het sy broer by die hakskeen geneem in die baarmoeder, en deur sy krag het hy met God geveg:

Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him [in] Bethel, and there he spake with us;
Ja, hy het met die engel geveg, en geseëvier: hy het gehuil, en Hom gesmeek: hy het Hom in Bet-El gevind, en daar het Hy met ons gespreek;

Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD [is] his memorial.
Selfs die HERE God van leërskare; die HERE is sy gedenknaam.

Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
Daarom keer jy tot jou God: bewaar barmhartigheid en oordeel, en wag voortdurend op jou God.

[He is] a merchant, the balances of deceit [are] in his hand: he loveth to oppress.
Hy is ‚'n handelaar, die skale van bedrog is in sy hand: hy lief om te verdruk.

And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: [in] all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that [were] sin.
En Efraim het gesê, Tog is ek ryk geword, ek het my goed verkry: in al my arbeide sal hulle geen ongeregtigheid in my vind wat sonde is nie.

And I [that am] the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
En ek wat die HERE jou God is van die land van Egipte af, sal jou nog in tente laat woon, soos in die dae van die plegtige fees.

I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
Ek het ook deur die profete gespreek, en ek het die gesigte vermeerder, en deur die bediening van die profete gelykenisse gebruik.

[Is there] iniquity [in] Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars [are] as heaps in the furrows of the fields.
Is daar ongeregtigheid in Gílead? sekerlik is hulle ydelheid: hulle offer bulle in Gilgal; ja, hulle altare is soos hope in die vorwe van die velde.

And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept [sheep].
En Jakob het in die land van Sirië gevlug, en Israel het vir ’n vrou gedien, en vir ’n vrou het hy bewaar.

And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.
En deur ‚'n profeet het die HERE Israel uit Egipte uitgebring, en deur ‚'n profeet is hy bewaar.

Ephraim provoked [him] to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
Efraim het Hom baie verbitterd deur bittere dinge: daarom sal Hy sy bloed op hom laat terugkeer, en sy Here sal sy smaad aan hom vergelde.
