The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

Die woord wat tot Jeremia van die HERE gekom het, sê,

Stand in the gate of the LORD’S house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all [ye of] Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the LORD.

Staan in die poort van die huis van die HERE, en roep daar hierdie woord uit, en sê, Hoor die woord van die HERE, al julle van Juda, wat in hierdie poorte ingaan om die HERE te aanbid.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

So sê die HERE van leërskare, die God van Israel, Verbeter julle weë en julle doenings, en ek sal julle in hierdie plek laat woon.

4

Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, [are] these.

Vertrou nie op leuende woorde nie, sê, Die tempel van die HERE, Die tempel van die HERE, Die tempel van die HERE, is hierdie.

5

For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;

Want as julle julle weë en julle doenings deeglik verbeter; as julle deeglik oordeel uitvoer tussen ’n man en sy naaste;

6

[If] ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:

As julle die vreemdeling, die wees, en die weduwee nie verdruk nie, en onskuldige bloed nie in hierdie plek vergiet nie, en agter ander gode aangaan tot julle eie skade nie:

Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.

Dan sal ek julle in hierdie plek laat woon, in die land wat ek aan julle vaders gegee het, vir ewig en altyd.

8

Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.

Kyk, julle vertrou op leuende woorde, wat nie baat nie.

9

Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;

Sal julle steel, moord pleeg, en egbreuk, en vals sweer, en wierook aan Baäl brand, en agter ander gode aangaan wat julle nie ken nie;

10

And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

En kom en staan voor My in hierdie huis, wat by my Naam genoem is, en sê, Ons is verlos om al hierdie gruwels te doen?

11

Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen [it], saith the LORD.

Is hierdie huis, wat by my Naam genoem is, ’n holte van diewe in julle oë geword? Kyk, selfs ek het dit gesien, sê die HERE.

12

But go ye now unto my place which [was] in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.

Maar gaan nou na my plek wat in Silo was, waar ek my Naam eers laat woon het, en sien wat ek daaraan gedoen het vanweë die goddeloosheid van my volk Israel.

And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;

En nou, omdat julle al hierdie werke gedoen het, sê die HERE, en ek het tot julle gespreek, vroeg opstaande en spreekende, maar julle het nie gehoor nie; en ek het julle geroep, maar julle het nie geantwoord nie;

Therefore will I do unto [this] house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.

Daarom sal ek aan hierdie huis, wat by my Naam genoem is, waarin julle vertrou, en aan die plek wat ek aan julle en aan julle vaders gegee het, doen soos ek aan Silo gedoen het.

15

And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, [even] the whole seed of Ephraim.

En ek sal julle van my aangesig wegwerp, soos ek al julle broers, die hele saad van Efraim, weggeworp het.

16

Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.

Daarom bid nie vir hierdie volk nie, en hef nie ‚'n geroep of gebed vir hulle op nie, en doen nie voorspraak by My nie: want ek sal jou nie hoor nie.

17

Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

Sien jy nie wat hulle in die stede van Juda en in die strate van Jérusalem doen nie?

18

The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead [their] dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

Die kinders versamel hout, en die vaders steek die vuur aan; en die vroue knie die deeg, om koeke te maak vir die koningin van die hemel, en om drankoffers uit te giet aan ander gode, dat hulle My mag terg.

Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: [do they] not [provoke] themselves to the confusion of their own faces?

Terg hulle My? sê die HERE: doen hulle dit nie hulleself tot die verwarring van hulle eie aangesigte nie?

20

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.

Daarom so sê die Here GOD; Kyk, my toorn en my grimmigheid sal uitgestort word op hierdie plek, op die mens, en op die dier, en op die bome van die veld, en op die vrug van die grond; en dit sal brand, en nie uitgeblus word nie.

21

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.

So sê die HERE van leërskare, die God van Israel; Sit julle brandoffers by julle offers, en eet vleis.

22

For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

Want ek het nie tot julle vaders gespreek, en hulle nie beveel in die dag toe ek hulle uit die land van Egipte uitgebring het, aangaande brandoffers of offers nie:

23

But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

Maar dit is die ding wat ek hulle beveel het, sê, Gehoorsaam my stem, en ek sal julle God wees, en julle sal my volk wees: en wandel in al die weë wat ek julle beveel het, dat dit met julle goed mag gaan.

24

But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels [and] in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

Maar hulle het nie gehoor nie, en nie hulle oor geneig nie, maar in die raad en in die verbeelding van hulle boos hart gewandel, en agteruitgegaan, en nie vorentoe nie.

25

Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending [them]:

Sedert die dag dat julle vaders uit die land van Egipte uitgegaan het tot hierdie dag toe het ek tot julle al my dienaars die profete gestuur, daagliks vroeg opstaande en stuurende hulle:

Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.

Tog het hulle nie na My geluister nie, en hulle oor nie geneig nie, maar hulle nek verhard: hulle het erger gedoen as hulle vaders.

27

Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.

Daarom sal jy al hierdie woorde tot hulle spreek; maar hulle sal nie na jou luister nie: jy sal ook tot hulle roep; maar hulle sal jou nie antwoord nie.

28

But thou shalt say unto them, This [is] a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

Maar jy sal tot hulle sê, Dit is ’n nasie wat nie die stem van die HERE hulle God gehoorsaam nie, en nie tugtiging ontvang nie: die waarheid is vergaan, en is afgesny van hulle mond.

29

Cut off thine hair, [O Jerusalem], and cast [it] away, and take up a lamentation on high places; for the LORD hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.

Skeer jou hare af, o Jérusalem, en gooi dit weg, en neem op ’n weeklag op die hoë plekke; want die HERE het die geslag van sy toorn verwerp en verlaat.

30

For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the LORD: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it.

Want die kinders van Juda het die kwaad in my oë gedoen, sê die HERE: hulle het hulle gruwels in die huis gestel wat by my Naam genoem is, om dit te verontreinig.

31

And they have built the high places of Tophet, which [is] in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded [them] not, neither came it into my heart.

En hulle het die hoë plekke van Topet gebou, wat in die vallei van die seun van Hinnom is, om hulle seuns en hulle dogters in die vuur te verbrand; wat ek nie beveel het nie, en dit het nie in my hart opgekom nie.

32

Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.

Daarom, kyk, die dae kom, sê die HERE, dat dit nie meer Topet, of die vallei van die seun van Hinnom, genoem sal word nie, maar die vallei van slagting: want hulle sal in Topet begrawe, totdat daar geen plek is nie.

33

And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray [them] away.

En die dooie liggame van hierdie volk sal voedsel wees vir die voëls van die hemel, en vir die diere van die aarde; en niemand sal hulle skrikmaak nie.

34

Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.

Dan sal ek uit die stede van Juda, en uit die strate van Jérusalem, die stem van vreugde en die stem van blydskap, die stem van die bruidegom, en die stem van die bruid, laat ophou: want die land sal verwoes word.
