Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged [him].

Toe het Pilatus daarom Jesus geneem, en Hom geslaan.

And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put [it] on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

En die soldate het ‚'n kroon van dorings gevleg, en dit op sy hoof gesit, en hulle het Hom ‚'n purper kleed aangetrek,

And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

En gesê, Wees gegroet, Koning van die Jode! en hulle het Hom met hulle hande geslaan.

Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

Pilatus het daarom weer uitgegaan, en tot hulle gesê, Kyk, ek bring Hom uit tot julle, dat julle mag weet dat ek in Hom geen skuld vind nie.

Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And [Pilate] saith unto them, Behold the man!

Toe het Jesus uitgekom, met die doringkroon, en die purper kleed. En Pilatus sê tot hulle, Kyk die mens!

When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify [him], crucify [him]. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify [him]: for I find no fault in him.

Toe die owerpriesters daarom en amptenare Hom sien, het hulle uitgeroep, sê, Kruisig Hom, kruisig Hom. Pilatus sê tot hulle, Neem julle Hom, en kruisig Hom: want ek vind geen skuld in Hom nie.

The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

Die Jode het hom geantwoord, Ons het ‚'n wet, en volgens ons wet moet Hy sterwe, omdat Hy Homself die Seun van God gemaak het.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

Toe Pilatus daarom hierdie woord hoor, was hy des te meer bevrees;

And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

En het weer in die regsaal gegaan, en sê tot Jesus, Vanwaar is U? Maar Jesus het hom geen antwoord gegee nie.

Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

Toe sê Pilatus tot Hom, Spreek U nie met my nie? weet U nie dat ek mag het om U te kruisig, en mag het om U los te laat nie?

Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power [at all] against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Jesus het geantwoord, Jy sou geen mag teen My gehad het nie, tensy dit jou van bo af gegee was: daarom het hy wat My aan jou oorgelewer het die groter sonde.

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

En van daardie af het Pilatus gesoek om Hom los te laat: maar die Jode het uitgeroep, sê, As jy hierdie man loslaat, is jy nie ’n vriend van die keiser nie: elkeen wat homself ’n koning maak, spreek teen die keiser.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Toe Pilatus daarom hierdie woord hoor, het hy Jesus uitgebring, en op die regterstoel gaan sit in ‚'n plek wat die Plaveisel genoem word, maar in die Hebreeus, Gabbata.

And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

En dit was die voorbereiding van die pasga, en omtrent die sesde uur: en hy sê tot die Jode, Kyk julle Koning!

But they cried out, Away with [him], away with [him], crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

Maar hulle het uitgeroep, Weg met Hom, weg met Hom, kruisig Hom. Pilatus sê tot hulle, Sal ek julle Koning kruisig? Die owerpriesters het geantwoord, Ons het geen koning behalwe die keiser nie.

Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led [him] away.

Toe het hy Hom daarom aan hulle oorgelewer om gekruisig te word. En hulle het Jesus geneem, en Hom weggelei.

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called [the place] of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

En Hy, wat sy kruis dra, het uitgegaan na ’n plek genaamd die plek van ’n skedel, wat in die Hebreeus Gólgota genoem word:

Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

Waar hulle Hom gekruisig het, en twee andere met Hom, aan die een kant, en aan die ander, en Jesus in die midde.

And Pilate wrote a title, and put [it] on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

En Pilatus het ook ‚'n opskrif geskrywe, en dit op die kruis gesit. En die skrif was, JESUS VAN NASARET DIE KONING VAN DIE JODE.

This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, [and] Greek, [and] Latin.

Hierdie opskrif het toe baie van die Jode gelees: want die plek waar Jesus gekruisig was, was naby die stad: en dit was geskrywe in Hebreeus, en Grieks, en Latyn.

Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

Toe het die owerpriesters van die Jode tot Pilatus gesê, Skryf nie, Die Koning van die Jode; maar dat Hy gesê het, Ek is Koning van die Jode.

Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

Pilatus het geantwoord, Wat ek geskrywe het, het ek geskrywe.

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also [his] coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

Toe het die soldate, toe hulle Jesus gekruisig het, sy klere geneem, en vier dele gemaak, vir elke soldaat ‚'n deel; en ook sy onderkleed: nou was die onderkleed sonder naat, van bo af deur en deur geweef.

They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

Hulle het daarom onder mekaar gesê, Laat ons dit nie skeur nie, maar die lot daaroor werp, wie se dit sal wees: dat die Skrif vervul mag word, wat sê, Hulle het my klere onder hulle verdeel, en oor my kleed die lot gewerp. Hierdie dinge het die soldate daarom gedoen.

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the [wife] of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

Nou het daar by die kruis van Jesus gestaan sy moeder, en sy moeder se suster, Maria die vrou van Kléopas, en Maria Magdaléna.

When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

Toe Jesus daarom sy moeder sien, en die dissipel wat Hy liefgehad het bystaan, sê Hy tot sy moeder, Vrou, kyk jou seun!

Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own [home].

Toe sê Hy tot die dissipel, Kyk jou moeder! En van daardie uur af het daardie dissipel haar in sy eie huis geneem.

After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Ná hierdie dinge, wetende Jesus dat alle dinge nou volbring was, dat die Skrif vervul mag word, sê Hy, Ek het dors.

Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put [it] upon hyssop, and put [it] to his mouth.

Nou was daar ‚'n vat vol asyn gestel: en hulle het ‚'n spons met asyn gevul, en dit op hisop gesit, en aan sy mond gebring.

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Toe Jesus daarom die asyn ontvang het, het Hy gesê, Dit is volbring: en Hy het sy hoof gebuig, en die gees gegee.

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away.

Die Jode daarom, omdat dit die voorbereiding was, dat die liggame nie op die sabbat op die kruis sou bly nie, (want daardie sabbat was ’n hoë dag,) het Pilatus gesmeek dat hulle bene gebreek sou word, en dat hulle weggeneem sou word.

Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

Toe het die soldate gekom, en die bene van die eerste gebreek, en van die ander wat saam met Hom gekruisig was.

But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

Maar toe hulle by Jesus kom, en sien dat Hy alreeds dood was, het hulle sy bene nie gebreek nie:

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

Maar een van die soldate het met ‚'n spies sy sy deurgeboor, en dadelik het daar bloed en water uitgekom.

And he that saw [it] bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

En hy wat dit gesien het, het getuig, en sy getuienis is waar: en hy weet dat hy die waarheid sê, dat julle mag glo.

For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

Want hierdie dinge is gebeur, dat die Skrif vervul mag word, Daar sal van Hom geen been gebreek word nie.

And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

En weer sê ’n ander Skrif, Hulle sal sien op Hom wat hulle deurgeboor het.

And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave [him] leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

En ná hierdie dinge het Josef van Arimatea, synde ’n dissipel van Jesus, maar in die geheim uit vrees vir die Jode, Pilatus gesmeek dat hy die liggaam van Jesus mag wegneem: en Pilatus het hom verlof gegee. Hy het daarom gekom, en die liggaam van Jesus weggeneem.

And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound [weight].

En daar het ook Nikodémus gekom, wat eers in die nag by Jesus gekom het, en ’n mengsel van mirre en aloë gebring, omtrent ’n honderd pond swaar.

Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

Toe het hulle die liggaam van Jesus geneem, en dit in linne doeke toegedraai met die speserye, soos die gebruik van die Jode is om te begrawe.

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

Nou was daar in die plek waar Hy gekruisig was ’n tuin; en in die tuin ’n nuwe graf, waarin nog nooit ’n mens gelê het nie.

There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation [day]; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

Daar het hulle Jesus daarom neergelê vanweë die Jode se voorbereiding; want die graf was naby.
