1
If [there be] therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
As daar dan enige vertroosting in Christus is, as enige troos van liefde, as enige gemeenskap van die Gees, as enige innerlike genegenheid en barmhartighede,
2
Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, [being] of one accord, of one mind.
Vervul my blydskap, dat julle eendersgesind mag wees, dieselfde liefde hebbende, eensgesind, van een gemoed.
3
[Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Laat niks geskied deur twis of ydele roem nie; maar in nederigheid ag elkeen die ander uitnemender as homself.
4
Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Let nie elkeen op sy eie dinge nie, maar elkeen ook op die dinge van andere.
5
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Laat hierdie gesindheid in julle wees wat ook in Christus Jesus was:
6
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Wat, in die gestalte van God synde, dit geen roof geag het om aan God gelyk te wees nie:
7
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Maar Homself ontledig het, en die gestalte van ’n dienskneg aangeneem, en in die gelykenis van mense gemaak is:
8
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
En in gedaante as ’n mens bevind, het Hy Homself verneder, en gehoorsaam geword tot die dood toe, ja, die dood van die kruis.
9
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Daarom het God Hom ook uitermate verhoog, en Hom ’n Naam gegee wat bo elke naam is:
10
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth;
Dat in die Naam van Jesus elke knie sou buig, van dié wat in die hemel, en dié wat op die aarde, en dié wat onder die aarde is;
11
And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
En dat elke tong sou bely dat Jesus Christus die Here is, tot die heerlikheid van God die Vader.
12
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Daarom, my geliefdes, soos julle altyd gehoorsaam was, nie alleen soos in my teenwoordigheid nie, maar nou veel meer in my afwesigheid, werk julle eie heil uit met vrees en bewing.

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of [his] good pleasure.
Want dit is God wat in julle werk beide om te wil en om te werk volgens sy welbehaaglikheid.
14
Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
Doen alle dinge sonder murmureeringe en twisings:
15
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
Dat julle onberispelik en opreg mag wees, die kinders van God sonder blaam, in die midde van ’n krom en verdraaide geslag, onder wie julle skyn as ligte in die wêreld;

Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
Die woord van die lewe vashoudende; dat ek in die dag van Christus mag roem, dat ek nie tevergeefs geloop het, of tevergeefs gearbei het nie.
17
Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
Ja, en as ek ook as ’n drankoffer uitgegooi word op die offerande en diens van julle geloof, is ek bly, en verbly my saam met julle almal.
18
For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.
Om dieselfde oorsaak is julle ook bly, en verbly julle saam met my.
19
But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
Maar ek hoop in die Here Jesus om Timótheüs spoedig na julle te stuur, dat ek ook van goeie moed mag wees, wanneer ek julle sake weet.
20
For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.
Want ek het niemand eendersgesind, wat natuurlik sal sorg vir julle sake nie.
21
For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.
Want almal soek hulle eie, nie die dinge wat Jesus Christus s’n is nie.
22
But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
Maar julle ken die proef van hom, dat, soos ’n seun met die vader, hy saam met my in die evangelie gedien het.
23
Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.
Hom daarom hoop ek te stuur so gou as ek sien hoe dit met my gaan.
24
But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.
Maar ek vertrou in die Here dat ek self ook spoedig sal kom.
25
Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.
Tog het ek dit nodig geag om Epafrodítus, my broer, en medewerker, en medestryd, maar julle boodskapper, en hy wat my noodsaaklikheid bedien het, na julle te stuur.

For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
Want hy het na julle almal verlang, en was baie ontsteld, omdat julle gehoor het dat hy siek was.
27
For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
Want hy was inderdaad siek naby die dood: maar God het barmhartigheid oor hom gehad; en nie alleen oor hom nie, maar ook oor my, dat ek nie droefheid op droefheid sou hê nie.

I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
Ek het hom daarom des te yweriger gestuur, dat, wanneer julle hom sien, julle julle weer mag verbly, en dat ek minder bedroef mag wees.
29
Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:
Ontvang hom daarom in die Here met alle blydskap; en hou sulkes in eer:
30
Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
Omdat hy om die werk van Christus naby die dood was, nie agtende op sy lewe nie, om julle gebrek in julle diens aan my te vervul.
